Plans to revamp Marshland Rd have been given the go-ahead. In a joint meeting on Monday, the Burwood-Pegasus and Shirley-Papanui Community Boards unanimously approved city council staff’s proposed improvements to add traffic lights, cyclelanes, and bus stops to the road.
The council’s move comes with up to 2600 new houses planned for the new neighbouring Prestons subdivision. Marshland Rd is one of Christchurch’s most dangerous, serving as a main commuter route for the north. Around 25,000 vehicles cross the intersection with Queen Elizabeth II Dve in both directions each day. It is estimated the work could be
completed by the end of this year. The road’s intersection with QE II Dve was recently revealed by The Star to be the city’s second most dangerous, with 47 crashes in the past five years. Its intersection with Mairehau Rd has seen an average of two serious crashes per year. After public consultation, the City Environment Group presented

Around 80 per cent said they supported the changes. “We were really happy with what we saw,” said Burwood-Pegasus chairwoman Andrea Cummings. •Turn to page 2

Weeks of practice came to fruition when they raced around the school, choosing either to cycle or scooter. •From page 1 Ms Cummings said the boards were most enthusiastic about plans for new cyclelanes. “We just want people to be as safe as possible, and that applies for any road user.” The City Environment Group will now put together a final design for the road before starting work in roughly four months time. New Zealand Transport Agency funding has been requested for the project. The city council is also reviewing the speed limit of Marshland Rd heading north of QE II Dve. Proposed changes to Marshland Rd: The installation of traffic lights on the intersection of Marshland Rd and Mairehau Rd. The installation of a bus stop 65 metres north of Marshland Rd’s intersection with Mairehau Rd. The installation of a bus stop on the south side of Mairehau Rd, 141 metres east of its intersection with Marshland Rd. The installation of cyclelanes around Marshland Rd’s intersection with Mairehau Rd. All parking and stopping restrictions on the north side of Mairehau Rd are revoked.

Green light for Bryndwr housing
3
By Cullen Smith Housing New Zealand has been given the go-ahead to build 30 new houses or apartments in Bryndwr. The city council approved the 8124 sq m site it owns on the corner of Clyde Rd and Aorangi Rd, at its meeting on Thursday. City councillor Raf Manji, who represents the Fendalton-Waimairi ward, said Housing NZ’s “exemplar project” was a great opportunity to build some high quality houses in the area. “I’m quite excited about the project.” He said some residents would no doubt have concerns around intensification. “But generally, in the process of upgrading housing there will be some intensification, but I’m confident it will lead to better quality houses and better community housing.” Andrew Booker, manager of Earthquake Recovery Operations for Housing NZ, said the development was part of an ongoing plan to “develop medium density housing to better utilise existing land”. The development is part of the Land Use Recovery Plan, which requires the city council to fast-track medium density housing projects in the city.
TROUBLE: The huge gumtree which creeps over the Frasers’ property. PHOTO: GEOFF SLOAN
Seedling grows to big problem By Cullen Smith
PLAN: Site outline for Clyde Rd, Bryndwr. Mr Booker said there was no current timeframe for when building will be completed, but the city council’s sign-off on the Bryndwr
site was a step in the right direction. Final designs for the housing had yet to be completed.
An Ilam couple have watched a gumtree grow from a seedling over the last 40 years. Now they want the city council to chop down the giant that messes their property next to Ray Blank Park. Gothic Pl residents Bruce and Jean Fraser have written to the Fendalton-Waimairi Community Board seeking support to either remove the offending tree or trim it back. “We’re getting past cleaning up the mess it makes,” Mrs Fraser said. In the letter to the community board ahead of today’s meeting, Mrs Fraser said she and her husband have lived next to Ray Blank Park for more than 43 years.

“In that time a gum tree near our boundary, planted about 40 years ago, has grown to a huge tree and is starting to overhang our property,” she said. “In the summer months it drops a tremendous amount of debris onto our house and property.” Mrs Fraser said her husband had coped until recently, but at 76 and waiting for hip surgery he could no longer climb on the roof to dislodge the material. Even with a gutter guard the spotting became clogged with “compacted saffron size seeds”. She asked board members for a “discussion” about the tree. Mrs Fraser said the city council last trimmed the tree in 2008. “It’s got bigger and bigger. It’s huge now.”

Korean student enjoys time of his life A young Korean visitor was fascinated to find that Merrin Primary School pupils wore uniforms when he arrived in Christchurch for a school visit. Sung Hyon Oh is a 10-year-old scholarship winner from Christchurch’s sister city Songpa-Gu in South Korea. Sung had to make a video to earn the scholarship. “I had to work hard,” he said, “It took about a month.” He won the scholarship at the age of nine, but came here a year later as he was too young at the time. His mother, Mrs Im, has accompanied him to New Zealand. She is a teacher, and has spent time visiting Merrin and Halswell schools and Kirkwood Intermediate to look at New Zealand’s education system. Meanwhile, Sung is having the experience of lifetime. “I want to take New Zealand’s culture back to Korea with me. It’s so different,” he said.

PAPANUI’S PAST: 1967-1968
Retailers confront challenge By Murray Williams, Papanui Heritage Group
Ten years after its foundation in 1957, the Papanui Central Business Association had evolved into a mature organisation that handled most of its business through an elected committee chaired by Dave Hattaway, the proprietor of a local menswear outlet. The major preoccupations of the association were dealt with by permanent sub-committees. The traffic lights committee was dedicated to preventing the erection of traffic lights at the junction of Papanui, Harewood and Main North Rds. Although previously unhappy about the operation of the roundabout they were now concentrating on the ‘beautification’ of this amenity; ‘low shrubs’ were recommended. The social sub-committee’s function was to encourage cooperation of members through social events such as Housie Housie, a dine and dance and a golf tournament. However, the association was starting to realise that its most important function was to respond to the challenge of the opening of the Northlands Mall in November 1967, a task that was handled by the promotions sub-committee. The availability of free parking was seen to be critically important and the development of the area off Wyndham St was fully supported to the extent of a $100 subsidy towards the sealing of this facility, (about $1700 in today’s value). It was also decided to attempt to combat the inevitable appeal of
CHANGING FACE: This image captures something of the flavour of the retail section of the northern end of Papanui Rd in the 1960s. The cars driving on the wrong side of the road are part of funeral cortege leaving St Giles Church. PHOTO: Canterbury Museum the new mall by planning a month by month programme of counter attractions. It was recommended that the PCBA should ‘procure’ a Father Christmas whose role would be to roam the village area giving out free sweets to children; however, this scheme depended on a level of sponsorship that was not forthcoming and the idea was dropped in favour of a more passive attraction of a Christmas tree theme adopted by retailers.
Earlier in the year, a three-day campaign of ‘window specials’ was followed by a ‘window spotting competition’ in the August school holidays. Fifteen members attended the AGM of the association that was held in the Papanui Memorial Hall on April 29, 1968. In his annual report, the chairman reviewed the activities of the year and noted the smoothness of the transition to decimal currency, yet he ended on a cautionary note. Although not directly referring to
Northlands Mall there was little doubt about the context of his final remark. “Papanui must have a facelift immediately in order to hold its place as a major shopping centre in the North of Christchurch. Paint should be applied in some instances. Please have a critical look at your own premises and take the necessary action now.” Reference: Minute Book of the Papanui Central Business Association, 1967-68.

Blitz on graffiti by volunteers
Scrapbooking Supplies & Classes
SCHOLARSHIP: Michael Ross, financial controller for Bridgestone New Zealand, presents to Jackson Roberts the Bridgestone Scholarship Winner 2013 for Excellence in the Sciences.
Scholarships awarded to Papanui HS students graffiti busters: Some of the 200 volunteers at work painting over tags in the city recently. The problem is a big cost to the city council. “Graffiti and vandalism costs Christchurch ratepayers in excess of $1 million annually. That is why the city council appreciates the community help,” Dr Woods said. Graffiti vandalism reduces the sense of community pride and perceptions of safety, and the prompt removal of tagging is the best deterrent to keeping the city clean of graffiti. If you have spotted tagging in your area, please report it to the city council graffiti department by emailing info@ ccc.govt.nz.
Papanui High School students have been recognised for their efforts in 2013 with scholarships towards from Bridgestone their further education. Three of the top year 13 students have been selected for the honour. Said one of the students Mark Wilkinson, awarded his for art: “I intend to study away from home, so the scholarship will assist me greatly in covering the extensive costs of this.” Molly Duff and Jackson Roberts were also honoured. Jackson was awarded for his work in the sciences, and he said that he was incredibly grateful and excited about the opportunity. “This scholarship has helped me to afford study in a subject I love and given me the chance to strive for a career I am passionate about,” he said.
Each student received $2500 towards their higher education and further study. Another $2500 has been provided to the junior year nine and 10 students for high achievement. Bridgestone has been giving these scholarships to the top Papanui High students for the past 10 years, with a total of $100,000 given to the school over that time. Principal Jeff Smith acknowledged their financial support. “We were very happy to present Bridgestone with a special ‘Friends of the School’ trophy and thank them for their on-going, loyal support of the school,” he said. “Bridgestone has a long history with Papanui dating back to a time when the company had a factory on the same street as the school – with many parents of students employed at the plant.”

Christchurch had a spruce up recently when paint-armed volunteers organised a mass clean-up of graffiti throughout the city. Tagging was painted over in various locations such as Denton Park , Richmond, CBD, Spreydon, Linwood Park and other community areas. A joint effort from Wigram MP Megan Woods, Mormon Helping Hands volunteers and the city council graffiti department saw a total of 200 volunteers target the various markings that deface property. While the city council supplied the paint, teams of youth and adults drove the streets spotting the offensive scribbles, and adult volunteers painted them over. Dr Woods hoped that the clean-up would improve the areas. “Denton Park is in my electorate and I know how important it is for locals. No one wants to come down to Denton Park and look at tagging. It is great to be part of a community effort to clean up the park and make it a more enjoyable space for everyone,” she said.

New life for 60s family home Good planning adds form and function to a solidly built gem
I
RECENTLY visited a friend who is remodelling their 1960s weatherboard house. I love homes from this era. They were solidly built with native timbers, often rimu, with varnished doors and timber windows, skirting boards and scotia. They also had beautiful timber floors, though in my friend’s case the floors are all covered with carpets and vinyl. I think it is a waste to cover a beautiful timber floor — why go to the expense of adding a manmade product when you have such a stunning product to work with? But fashion rather than our conscience often dictated decorating in the past. The windows were often large and low to the floor in living areas to allow ample natural light to filter into the rooms. Windows of this era gave an impression of space, although in this particular home the rooms were generous and wellplanned. The house is still mainly in its original condition, with only the bathroom having been altered. It would originally have had a separate toilet from the bathroom, but the wall has been removed to open the space. The bath has also been removed and a shower added. It has created a very generous bathroom, almost to the point of appearing empty. My friend is planning on reinstating the bath and putting in a separate shower. This property is a lovely family home in a good area for schools, so for resale value this is a good

option. I always feel a family home needs a bath, especially if there are small children, and as an adult it is always nice to treat yourself to a soak. But remember — not all baths are created equal. When I renovated I put in a 1950s castiron bath, as I found newer ones were not as comfortable or deep enough for a luxurious bath unless you have an unlimited budget. The overflow often takes 100mm off the top. The laundry in this home is generous but unfortunately, as with many laundry designs of that era, not thought through for practical function. The linen cupboard opens on to the passage; putting the door into the laundry makes more sense. Removing the window and replacing it with a smaller one will allow for the dryer to go on the wall with a front-loader washing machine below, with space for folding in between. A half-sized tub will make this area compact and more userfriendly as it allows space for a second toilet. This can be accessed from the hallway or from the outside, if in the garden or entertaining, without having to go through the house. The entrance to this home is spacious and light. Guests come through a traditional frosted

glass door with a full-length glass panel next to it. As this door is visible from the street, the frosted pattern creates privacy. Instead of the entrance being rectangular, it fans out, linking the private areas of the bedrooms to the living spaces. The house is a boomerang shape and has been positioned on the section for the sun. This creates the opportunity for a lovely private backyard for entertaining, a project that’s currently in the planning stage.

The kitchen is tucked away and perhaps not as practical as it could be. It has three doorways leading into it so it becomes a thoroughfare when often you want to keep family and guests out from under your feet, especially if you have small children. Closing off two of the doors will free up wall space. Removal of the existing wall between the original dining room and the kitchen will create a light area with only one access point into the kitchen.
French doors will eventually go in the dining room wall, creating indoor-outdoor flow and another entertainment area. It will be interesting to watch progress on this lovely family home and the end result will be stunning. ■ If you are interested in anything I have discussed, you can send me an email at terry@terrylobb.com or like me on Facebook — Terry Lobb Colour and Design.

Join the Marist Albion Club in 2014
T
he Marist Albion Rugby Club has a fraternal relationship and is affiliated with 27 other Marist clubs throughout New Zealand. Marist Albion is an open club offering membership to all, drawing on no specific geographical area but on a population city-wide. The club has up to five feeder secondary schools and a large number of primary schools for our junior club, many which return on leaving school. We are an amateur rugby club operating for the benefit of those players in our community who share similar values and interests.
We particularly recognize the need to respect the special character of the Catholic and Christian interests of our club. We will help and encourage individuals (players, coaches, administrators and supporters) to maximise their potential and provide a stimulating and enjoyable social environment to all our members. Marist Albion Club is once again based at the Papanui Bowling Club in Condell Avenue and is an excellent venue for all players, coaches, administrators, our valued sponsors, junior players and parents.
A new focus in 2014 has seen the appointment of a Rugby Development Officer Rowan O’Gorman, is a well-known and long-time respected senior Division 1 player. Rowan played for Marist as a youngster, and on leaving Nelson College returned to play for the Marist Albion Club, bringing up his 200th senior game in 2013. This new appointment is an extension of the club structure of supporting players, coaches and sponsors and at the same time endeavouring to maintain a professional standard of coaching of all grades. The Division 1 Team They had a successful year and played in the semi-final of the Hawkins Trophy. Over the last few years the Division 1 team has played well and steadily risen to attain a position in the top 4 senior teams in 2013. In 2014, the team will be coached by the experienced Adrian Kennedy, assisted by Kelly Hansen and Greg Coffey. Once again the Division 1 team looks forward to building on the 2013 result. Pre-season Pre-season has been underway for a number of weeks now and is held on a Tuesday and Thursday night for all players from Colts to Seniors at South Hagley
Marist Albion Our Junior Club remains strong and family orientated, supporting the boys and girls in developing their skills in a fun and friendly environment. It’s about the kids enjoying their sport and it is important that they learn the skills properly so they can go on to participate fully in the game, now and
in the future. Teams and their supporters are encouraged to build team spirit, play skilfully and show respect and pride. Our club has always been well represented in the junior competition, fielding teams in all years from Under-6s right through to U13. We are very fortunate to have amazing support from both our senior club and also our fabulous club sponsors, which enables us to provide some fantastic resources to our coaches and managers for the development
park. The numbers attending training are healthy and the Division 1 side are looking forward to going up to Wellington on Friday and taking on the best Marist sides in the country at the Spillane cup. It is envisaged that the club will have an increase in teams in 2014 with teams in the Division 1, Division 2, Colts Premier and Colts and two teams in the Division 3. It is hoped that a women’s team will once again wear the club colours at some stage this year. Overall there are plenty of teams available if you are interested in playing for Marist Albion. Check out the Marist Albion Rugby Club at www.maristalbionrugby.co.nz and the link to our Facebook page, which has training times, dates and pre-season games. New players welcome. The year 2014 promises to be another excellent season, including the very popular Pompallier tournament. This is run each year by NZ Marist and sees our U13, U11 and U9 teams compete against Ashburton and Timaru Marist. With plenty of rugby as well as lunchtime relay races and tugs of war, this is always a great day. We are really looking forward to hosting this tournament this year as part of our club weekend on

HEALTH & BEAUTY Rewiring the brain for people with
Parkinson’s disease I
f you have Parkinson’s disease, you cannot afford to underestimate the benefits of exercise. Being sedentary is one of the fastest ways to see your symptoms get worse. To be the best you can be at every stage of your Parkinson’s disease, review your exercise program and consider a new Parkinson’s program called PD Warrior. PD Warrior has been designed to treat the symptoms of Parkinson’s disease which affects parts of the brain responsible for initiating and co-ordinating movement. “Exercise needs to be a front line defence for people with Parkinson’s disease. PD Warrior aims to re-wire the brain to allow everyday moments and activities to be performed with greater ease,” said Melissa McConaghy, co-founder of PD Warrior and
True
specialist neurological physiotherapist at Advance Rehab Centre. “Just like your muscles benefit from cross-training, your brain also benefits from being challenged and surprised. “Advanced Rehab accredited physiotherapists found that the right kind of exercise can improve the functioning of brain pathways not already destroyed by the disease. We already know that inactivity in people with Parkinson’s disease can lead to further and faster deterioration of the brain’s function.” Purposeful movement can combat the loss of motor control seen in Parkinson’s disease, and PD Warrior combines a high effort, intensive workout with a challenging combination of movements and mental strategy. It is aimed at people with early
stages of Parkinson’s disease with the aim of slowing down the progress of the disease. “PD Warrior is loads of fun and can get very loud with plenty of variety to keep people engaged. You get to connect with like-minded people who want to help fight your symptoms,” says Laurie. The PD Warrior programme has been available in Australia at Advance Rehab Centre since 2012 and initial results have been impressive. It is now available here in Christchurch. Muscle People Physiotherapy clinics at YMCA Hereford Street and
Bishopdale are the first people to bring this innovative programme to New Zealand from Australia. The first step is an assessment at Muscle People to determine whether you are suitable for the programme before joining a high energy circuit class. For more information about PD Warrior visit www.pdwarrior.com or if you are interested in an initial assessment telephone the friendly team at Muscle People at YMCA Hereford Street on 961 0236 or Bishopdale on 360 3606.

Science alive under 5 fest Science Alive Under 5 Fest
NOR’WEST NEWS
March 7-13
– a great opportunity to learn alongside your little one!
Science in early childhood
T
O
Joint feature with Barnardos
he Science Alive Under 5 Fest on March 7 to 13, at the Table Tennis Canterbury Stadium, 294 Blenheim Road (opposite The Warehouse), will provide children with a unique opportunity to explore, experiment and play with science. “We started running the Under 5 Fest in 2011, just prior to the February earthquake. The Fest was such a huge success that we were determined to keep it running, despite the demolition of our building,” shares Science Alive CEO Neville Petrie.
Discovery and exploration
Preschoolers are natural scientists. They are curious and keen to test out their ideas using all sorts of interesting materials. The Science Alive Under 5 Fest will give children the chance to explore hands-on science, and experiment with sound, air, light, magnets and much more.
Following own interests
Te Whariki, the NZ early childhood curriculum, highlights the importance of active exploration, where children have the opportunity to follow their own interests. By ‘playing’ in science, children have the opportunity to develop individual ideas, and to take risks and test those ideas.
ut comes a nest... a collection of bird puppets... a small container of ducks... a book about birds and nests. A gaggle of wideeyed three-year-olds sit, and already the questions start. “Oh what’s that?” asks a child. “How does a bird make a nest?” asks another. A Barnardos teacher pulls various bird theme resources from a Science Alive Science Starter Sack, and the learning continues. Children from Barnardos Kidstart Early Learning Centres Richmond and Te Puna Oraka gather around, curious and involved. The questions are individual, the responses are collective. “How does a bird make a nest?” asks a girl. “With sticks,” replies a boy. “But how do they stick them together?” inquires the teacher. “They use Sellotape,” the girl replies. “But they don’t have hands,” pipes up another child. Hands-on science is a great example,
where children can talk, think and discover scientific ideas through individual and group exploration.
Learning together
The NZ approach to education favours learning together. Coming to the Science Alive Under 5 Fest will allow children to question, discuss and explore scientific ideas with their peers, siblings and the adults around them. Adults will also enjoy the festival and leave with plenty of ideas for further learning at home.

Party central in paradise LAID BACK: Sunlounger dock at Koh Samui’s Langham Place Hotel.
There is a rickety path of wooden slats to a viewpoint restaurant, and the whole area gives off an endofthe-world paradise impression. There are eco-tours available that include elephant trekking (this is often only about 10 minutes atop an elephant), waterfall hiking and visits to temples or scenic beaches such as Bottle Beach and Koh Ma, a deserted island connected to Koh Phangan by a sandbar.
Thailand’s islands are tropical idylls by day – but put your dance shoes on at night, writes Mairead Flynn A TRIP sampling the diversity of Southeast Asian destinations can take you from the sleek modernity of Singapore to the ancient temples of Cambodia’s Angkor Wat. And then there are the beaches of Thailand: relaxing, beautiful and, for the adventurous holidaymaker, a lot more exotic than Miami. Thai beaches offer stretches of sand, water sports, outdoor activities and cheap food and drink. Off the Andaman Sea are Phuket and Koh Phi Phi, which rose to international fame after being featured in the Leonardo DiCaprio film The Beach. But there are also renowned islands along the Gulf of Thailand— Koh Samui, Koh Phangan and Koh Tao. Each of these has its own charms and attractions, and regular boat services make it easy to travel to them. All three also have fantastic party scenes.
KOH SAMUI This is the main transport centre for the islands, with a fancy airport.

KOH PHANGAN This island is home to the legendary Full Moon Party, but locals have realised the potential of such events and every few metres you’ll find a
sign advertising a Black Moon Party, a Waterfall Party or some other kind of party. Participants at these beach raves adorn themselves with neon body paint, then dance until they drop. The Full Moon Party especially is notorious for drugs, but you’ll see signs as soon as you disembark at the ferry port warning that marijuana and mushrooms are illegal. Be aware that travellers have ended up in Thai jails for violating drug laws. Sunrise Beach is the cove where the Full Moon event takes place, but it is quiet and stunning during the day.
This is the island more renowned for its underwater charms than its beach parties, though it has the latter sewn up as well. Many resorts on Koh Tao are also dive schools and offer lessons and dives as part of their packages. Snorkelling excursions can also be easily booked. The beaches are dotted with wooden long-tail boats and water taxis, which can be hired for tours around the island’s different beaches and coves. Renting motorcycles or scooters on this island is slightly less fraught than on the previous two, as it is quieter with less traffic, and it’s a great way to explore the tropical paradise overland. At night many bars and restaurants along the sand offer fire shows, live music and late DJs. It’s easy to wander safely along the beach from one venue to another. A few blocks inland you can grab a banana and Nutella pancake.

Astaxanthin improves our quality of life
M
ore and more research studies are showing astaxanthin to have numerous health benefits. Astaxanthin (pronounced “asta-Zan-Thin”) is a natural fat-soluble antioxidant extracted from marine microalgae that is grown in fresh water. It gives salmon and flamingos their pink colour. It is considered to be one of the most powerful antioxidants known with up to 550 times the antioxidant activity of vitamin E. Astaxanthin helps make the skin look younger, helps diminish age spots, freckles, wrinkles and damaged skin. It acts as an internal sunscreen, increasing the time in the sun before sunburn occurs. Injuries, arthritis, disease etc, all cause inflammation in the body leading to pain, poor health and even death. Astaxanthin greatly reduces inflammation and recovery time. If you take astaxanthin after hard physical activity where you would normally
feel sore the next day, most people find they are pretty much fine the next day. It is therefore great for people that work or train hard. Astaxanthin has shown itself to be one of the best supplements for recovery from nerve injuries including RSI and OOS. In fact most problems seem to come right much quicker with astaxanthin. Astaxanthin improves cholesterol quality; helps prevent cardiovascular disease and atherosclerosis of the arteries. It also helps protect and heal the eyes and protect and improve brain function. Some research has shown it to help protect against cancer as well as slowing the growth and spread of certain cancers. Astaxanthin helps increase strength, energy and endurance. It provides powerful antioxidant support for the whole body with surprising protection against the ageing process. Marshall’s Health & Natural Therapy. Phone 388 5757.
Miracle weight loss fruit
A
n extract of a small pumpkinlike fruit called garcinia cambogia from India and Asia has shown itself to greatly assist weight management and overall health. In fact many have found it to increase fat loss by two to three times greater than normal. TV’s Dr. Oz has said it is the most effective and fastest working natural supplement to support weight loss. Even without exercise and diet changes many have found it beneficial, although even better and quicker results are often obtained with extra exercise and an improved diet. The extract of this amazing fruit is called hydroxycitric acid (HCA) or CitriMax. Research has shown HCA to help suppress the appetite, reduce cravings, feel fuller for longer, increase energy levels, help prevent fat from being made and stored in the body, increase lean muscle mass, increase serotonin levels in the brain that help control mood and sleep (great for emotional eaters), improve cholesterol levels that may help reduce the chances of strokes and cardiovascular disease, help prevent sugar spikes as well as other health benefits.
It is considered a very safe supplement (although check first if you are on medication) as it has been used for centuries as a flavouring agent and digestive aid. To obtain reliable results it is important to take a product that contains a standardized extract of 60 per cent HCA and also take the recommended amount as used in the clinical research. Some supplements also contain ChromeMate, a well-researched form of niacin-bound chromium to help improve the results even more. Pop into Marshall’s Health & Natural Therapy, 110 Seaview Road, New Brighton and talk to our naturopath and medical herbalist, or one of our helpful natural health advisers. Phone: 388 5757.

a warm and Tasty herb can For welcoming home beat vile virus T A pizza ingredient may help ward off the notorious vomiting bug, research has shown. Carvacrol is a plant compound in oregano oil that gives the pizza herb its distinctive aroma and flavour. Scientists have found it effective against the highly infectious norovirus, the chief cause of vomiting and diarrhoea around the world. The herb chemical strips the virus of its ‘‘armour’’, a tough outer protein coat, making it easier to destroy with other agents. Lead researcher Dr Kelly Bright, of the University of Arizona, says: ‘‘Carvacrol could potentially be used as a food sanitiser and possibly as a surface sanitiser. ‘‘We have some work to do to assess its potential but carvacrol has a unique way of attacking the virus, which makes it an interesting prospect.’’ Norovirus is a common cause of food-borne disease and a particular problem in nursing homes, hospitals, schools and on cruise ships. Although unpleasant, the infection usually passes in a

Because carvacrol attacks external elements of norovirus, scientists believe it is unlikely to trigger resistance. Used as a sanitiser it would be longlasting, non-corrosive, fumefree and safe, say the experts, who see it being especially useful where people may be vulnerable to the effects of
strong bleach or alcohol-based cleaners, such as care homes and schools. However, the scientists stress that pizza consumption won’t protect against norovirus. Nor do they advise taking concentrated carvacrol, which, though nontoxic, would cause burning and numbness of the tongue. The research is published in the latest edition of the Journal Of Applied Microbiology.

A heating/cooling system
tailored to your needs
T
he team at Enviro Master Ltd can help keep you cool this summer either at home or work. Enviro Master supplies, installs and services all the leading brands including Panasonic, Fujitsu, Mitsubishi and Daikin. This means our team can show you which system and brand will best suit your needs. Would you like to maximise the number of days you can use your swimming pool? Heating your pool can do this and one of the most cost effective ways is with a water heat pump. Enviro Master Ltd can supply, install and service your swimming pool heat pump, providing you with a comfortable, extended swimming season. Servicing your heat pump is extremely important to ensure that it is working as effectively and efficiently as possible resulting in a healthy, hygienic heat pump, lower power bills and greater comfort. But beware, not all cleaning companies are equal. We are constantly hearing of people being charged huge amounts for servicing and all they are getting is a heat pump clean. We at EnviroMaster, are qualified engineers and therefore are able to fully test and diagnose any problems you may or may not be aware of with your heat pump. Also, as we are associated with all major brands, we are able to repair these under warranty if they are still within the warranty period.
It is important to remember, when selecting an installer, the manufacturer’s warranty does not cover the installation and consumers could be responsible for any repair or damage caused to the system due to poor installation. Enviro Master’s five-star installation guarantee ensures correct installation, and a demonstration so customers have an understanding on how it will best meet their needs. For a free in home consultation, call Enviro Master on 366 0525 or visit our showroom at 41A Shakespeare Rd, Waltham, Christchurch.
Kitchen extraction
O
pen plan kitchens are becoming an increasingly popular choice in homes across New Zealand. They allow a family to spend quality time together without infringing on each other’s personal space and activities. However, you really have to consider all the activities that will take place in the room, and how they can work together in harmony. Preparing meals, watching television, surfing the net, doing homework, paying the bills, relaxing with a magazine and chatting with friends – you have to make sure these can all happily co-exist in your open plan kitchen. Therefore, you need good kitchen extraction so that smells do not permeate the whole open plan room, and you also need to consider the noise of the range hood. “Smooth-Air Products presents a range of standard and custom options to help you achieve a healthy, clean-air kitchen – one with less smell, less steam and markedly less noise”, says national sales and marketing
Selected models have savings up to $800 off the recommended retail price!
manager Vince Atkinson. “We don’t build the rangehood shell – we leave that to the designer and homeowner, who know the exact look they want. Instead, we offer custom extractor inserts to a high level of specification,” Atkinson says. “These are designed with powerful fans set in the ceiling, or on exterior walls, out of earshot from living spaces. Systems can be configured to any shape – including a cupboard – giving a broad range of design options.” Smooth-Air Products also upgrades existing hoods, inserting quieter, more efficient mechanical elements. Standard inserts for flatpack kitchens are another design option from the company. “Our simple, day-to-day goal is to create near-silent, fresh-air solutions for a range of modern interiors,” says Vince. For further details, contact Smooth-Air Products, phone 0800 Smooth (766 684). Website: www.smooth-air.co.nz.

More people are reading The Star THe LATeST 2013 nielsen Consumer and Media Insights survey confirms more people are now reading The Star. Looking at Q1-Q42013 compared with Q1-Q42012 Christchurch readership trends, The Star’s average issue readership has increased 6000 readers for both the Midweek and Weekend editions, while the city’s daily newspaper, The Press, has lost an average of 15,000 readers across the same period. The Press has lost an average of 21,000 readers each edition across its full circulation area according to the survey released today. All major paid daily newspapers have lost readers over the year, with the New Zealand Herald down 10.5 per cent, The Dominion Post down 10.2 per cent, The Press down 9.8 per cent, and the Waikato Times down 16.7 per cent. However the Otago Daily Times has fared better only losing 2.1 per cent. The Star general manager Steve McCaughan said the survey results were “fantastic news for our newspaper and our advertisers.” “I believe the future of newspapers is in the free model like The Star”, he said. “People now have so many sources to obtain free news from, free newspapers, online, TV, radio, etc, it is now a lot harder to sell a daily newspaper in Christchurch. “Also with The Star now back in local family ownership, we mean it

Roast special, 7 days "We have introduced a new section to our buffet - an International Foods counter where we will feature different world cuisines. It starts this week with a Taste of Italy," says Margaret Wong, general manager. Running for the next few months, a select choice of Italian style soups, entrees, and mains with feature on this special section within the regular buffet each day, with Italian menu items changing every few weeks. Other countries will be featured on the new International Foods counter as the year unfolds, so watch this space for some exciting, authentic dishes.

With every visit, his fanbase has become larger and larger: from under 7000 people in 1978 to over 60,000 in 2009 every concert sold out and surpassing all records for international comedians in NZ. This time round will be no exception. He's funnier than ever and he'll be on his very high horse as he regales audiences with the humour that's filled his head since his last visit. A recent critique from the UK ...."Like no other, BILLY CONNOLLY turns our everyday life experiences into stunningly funny situations, carrying his audience from one irreverent story to another until a collective exhaustion sets in! ... "It's great to have Billy back for a comprehensive 12-city tour,” says promoter Ian Magan. “In the 36 years he has visited New Zealand, Billy has become a true friend to Kiwis who love his irreverent and topical humour. Billy Connolly plays one show in Christchurch on Friday 25th April at the CBS Arena. Tickets at Ticketek.
Additional to the new International Foods counter launching with a Taste of Italy, the buffet will also be celebrating Ireland's St Patrick's Day by adding some traditional Irish flavours to their extensive selection. "St Patrick's Day falls on Monday 17th March this year, but we will be celebrating the event with some special Irish dishes on our dinner buffet Saturday 15th, Sunday 16th, and Monday 17th March," explains Margaret.
